Is What I do Photojournalism?: There is a lot of controversy these days over what is and is not "photojournalism." You may notice the title on my card and here on my site is "photojournalist." This is because I AM a photojournalist in addition to and beyond the work I do at weddings. As such, when I shoot news or editorial work for public consumption in newspapers and magazines, I do so in accordance with a strict Photojournalists' Code of Ethics of the National Press Photographer's Association While most of these ethics also apply to the work I do at weddings, wedding photography is usually created for private consumption as opposed to being created for the public record. The rules at weddings are more along the lines of "Make pleasing and flattering images that artistically tell the story of what happened on our wedding day." Though I am still working in the role of a photojournalist in that I'm not usually directing or staging the action or sequence of events, I am often also called upon to create 'camera aware' portraits or to photograph all of the small details of the day from cake decoration and flower arrangement to how well the bride's hairstyle was done. It is expected that I will be biased in my documentation to show everyone I photograph only in the most flattering way possible. With event documentation for private consumption, it is also assumed that I will manipulate my images in Photoshop in order to create a more pleasing record of events for my clients to enjoy and remember later in life. This all being the case, in a strict definition of the profession, most of what passes for Wedding Photojournalism today is not photojournalism because such bias and manipulation strictly cannot be allowed when shooting for the public record. So, while I am a photojournalist and I will continue to identify myself as such, I more rightly call the photographic style that I employ at weddings "artistic documentation." Whatever it is called, this style is what you see in my galleries here on my site and that is the vision that most of my wedding clients hire me for. If it interests you for an event that you have planned, I look forward to hearing from you. |
